My Linux Rig: The Linux Setup - Tony Baldwin, Translator

mylinuxrig:

Tony’s take on Linux is great because it comes from a political perspective, but also a practical one. He makes a strong effort to use free and open source software, but at the same time, he uses these free tools to earn his living. So he’s taking a stand, but he’s not compromising anything in…

I was interviewed by mylinuxrig.com (a tumblr)

dreamlog - a dream log management system in bash

So, I decided to start logging my dreams. This is recommended if you want to remember your dreams, and, especially, if you want to try lucid dreaming, dreaming with awareness that you are dreaming (which can even give one the ability to control one’s dreams, and, thus, do fun stuff, like make a plate of bacon appear, or fly, or something).

Ever the gnu/linux geek that I am, keeping a pen and notebook on hand is just not sufficient for me. I keep a laptop next to the bed (running CrunchBang Linux), so I can ssh into my main box, where I keep the following script (or, I could just walk to the main computer, since my office is about 4 steps from my bedroom).

#!/bin/bash

#################################
# dreamlog - by tony baldwin #
# keeping a log of dreams #
# released according to GPL v.3 #
################################

filedate=$(date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S)

if [[ $1 = r ]]; then
if [[ $2 ]]; then
cat ~/.dreamlog/$2* | less
else
cat ~/.dreamlog/*.dream | less
fi
else
if [[ $1 = h ]]; then
echo "dreamlog - opens a new dreamlog file to edit in vim.
dreamlog l - lists all dreamlog entries.
dreamlog r - reads all entries (cats all files in the dir, pipes to less)
dreamlog r yyyymmdd - reads entries from date yyyymmdd. One can specify just yyyymm, or just yyyy, even.
dreamlog h - displays this help message.
dreamlog management system by tony baldwin, http://tonybaldwin.me, released according to GPL v. 3"

else
if [[ $1 = l ]]; then
ls -lat ~/.dreamlog/
else
vi + ~/.dreamlog/$filedate.dream
fi
fi
fi
exit

I keep this in ~/bin/dreamlog, and, as one might guess, I have a directory ~/.dreamlog in my home directory.

When I run “dreamlog” (script with no other variable), it creates a new file with the yyyymmddhhmmss.dream (so, right now, this would be 20121110122623.dream), and opens it for editing in vim (yes, you can substitute your favorite editor, emacs, nano, whatever, or just $EDITOR).

If I do “dreamlog r” (read dreamlog), it cats every file in the directory and pipes it to less. It comes out oldest file, first (I should reverse that…hmmm…thinking), so I can read the entries newest to oldest, like any normal blog. If I do “dreamlog l” (list dreamlog entries), it lists all files in that directory. To read an entry from a specific date, or entries from a specific time period, “dreamlog r $filedate” where $filedate would just be any date parameter, such as all for a year “yyyy”, all for a month “yyyymm”, or even to grab a specific day “yyyymmmdd”, i.e., for, say, 10 November 2012, one would just do “dreamlog r 20121110”.

Stuff I have Translated: Psychology and Linux SysAdmin stuff.

Right here you can download 15 academic psychology articles, in both, the original Portuguese, plus the English translations, for which I am responsible, all of which were published in the Spanish Journal of Psychology at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

All of the translations are also available on the journal’s website, of course, but not with the originals. The download is a zip file, containing 30 pdf files, each article in both languages.

There’s some fascinating stuff in some of these (although some contain rather dry, statistical analyses and stuff that isn’t as fascinating, too).

Also, many of you already know that you can read the Debian Administrators Handbook on-line, of which I translated chapters 1-5 and 7-9 from French to English. (acknowledgements, in which my name appears).

Image/photo

As they are all published materials, I can divulge them, which, sadly, I cannot do with most of my work, being confidential medical materials, patent/IP related materials, contracts, and other matters all protected by NDAs and confidentiality agreements.

After a little customization…

I replaced the stock openbox rc.xml with my own (completely changing almost all keybindings), removed some bloat (geany, xchat, replaced with vim and irssi, of course), and changed the gtk theme, but that’s about it.
